A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
